Two years ago I purchased an upgrade license key for Windows 8 via my university. Since then I haven’t reformatted or reinstalled anything. If I switch to an SSD and perform a clean installation using that key (same motherboard and CPU), will the automatic activation process succeed? Would it fail, requiring me to call Microsoft support to resolve the issue? Was this a one-time activation code? I don’t recall the service name I bought it from—perhaps something like Dreamspark. Regarding the installation, would it be complicated? I’m holding off on buying an SSD because of this situation. I’d rather avoid transferring all my data from the current boot drive and cloning it, opting instead for a fresh OS installation.

You need to apply the original key first, then use the upgrade key.

It should work fine. You may need to contact MS. Share your details and everything will be okay. The upgrade license agreement simply requires a key from the older operating system, so make sure it's ready.
