Changing the motherboard in a Windows 7 system may affect compatibility. You might need to boot into safe mode and install the right drivers, but overall functionality could be impacted.

Windows may fail to start when connected to a different motherboard. Activation might occur if it boots, but you’ll need to perform a fresh installation on the new board using a new or old drive. Remember, with an OEM license you must also obtain another Windows license since they aren’t transferable.

I attempted this myself, though technically it wasn't possible. If you contact Microsoft to enable Windows and clarify your motherboard issue, they may provide a free license. I handled the activation by speaking with the representative, confirming my existing code, and remotely accessing my machine to enter the new product code. I saved the details securely in case I needed to reinstall later. Microsoft was very accommodating throughout. I considered this before purchasing a fresh Windows version. EDIT: I also used the same drive during installation and didn’t encounter launch problems beyond reactivation requirements. The system flagged my version as non-genuine.

The test bench windows aren't turned on, yet it works because they continuously exchange the motherboard.

Typically, the operating systems they employ are Windows Pro, which helps them relocate drives across different motherboards without many problems. Considering this, during benchmarks it's best to start from a clean installation to eliminate any inconsistencies.

It turned out I had someone from Microsoft remotely manage my PC and install Windows for me.
