Hello, newbie here. I updated my RAM from 8 GB to 16 GB recently (both support 3200 MHz and are CL16). The old unit has been sitting unused, but I’m considering using the 8 GB version on my motherboard for better performance. However, when I try to install it in the empty slot, it won’t boot. I’m wondering if there’s something I’m missing—should I disable XMP settings first? Or should I switch it to a different channel? My current setup includes: MOBO – Asus Prime B450-Plus RAM; Hyper X Predator 16 GB at 3200 MHz (installed per manual on A2 and B2); CPU – Ryzen 5 2600, no overclocking; GPU – RX580 8 GB, no overclocking. Both sets consist of two sticks. On their product page, the XMP Timing Parameter shows identical settings: https://www.kingston.com/datasheets/HX432C16PB3K2_8.pdf and https://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/HX43...3K2_16.pdf. The description confirms both were tested at 3200 MHz, 16-18-18, and 1.35V.
mixing and matching RAM is completely fine for computers. The system will operate using the slowest RAM speed. For example, with a 3600MHz setup, adding a 3200MHz stick won’t affect performance—XMP can boost it further. Just ensure you place the 16GB modules in A1 and B1, then add extra sticks to A2 and B2 in odd numbers if needed.
I attempted to transfer the 16GB from A2 and B2 to A1 and B1, installed the 8GB kit in the A2 and B2 ports, but encountered two boot failures. On the third attempt, the system prompted me to open the BIOS. The motherboard recognized the new modules, displaying a total of 24GB, yet it reduced the clock speed to 2400 MHz instead of the intended 3200 MHz.
I also attempted it, but got the same outcome. Two boot failures occurred, and on the third one the BIOS screen appeared.
I believe the 16GB unit can support the XMP profile, while the 8GB units cannot. If you require more than 16GB, just leave them in and accept slower performance; otherwise, use the 8GB sticks and maintain your faster RAM configuration.
