Hi! I recently changed to Windows 10 (MS iso) from W7. Mainly for steam, chrome and drivers support. Also swapped my aging 270 to 6500xt for reasonable price. On paper new gpu should be around twice as fast. Except my cpu is i5 4440 and pcie3. FPS is not an issue here. Its the lag. Lag is everywhere. Doesn't matter what game. Lag has occured in Stargunner (slight lag during saving, 1996), Quake 3 (1999), Hard Reset (2011), Left 4 Dead 2 (2009), Borderlands 2 (2012). NFS Heat (2019) was unplayable. No matter what settings. Low to ultra. Laggy 50ish fps, drops to 15 fps. With modern cpu and pcie4 6500xt can handle this game at ultra 60 fps.
Lag have occured when my in-game character stays still and a moment later I move my mouse around (different scenery, maybe more objects). Sometimes mouse gets stuck (crosshair) for a second and then works normally again. Happened in Quake 3.
L4D2 is interesting. Average FPS is around 150. Yet I remember a lag when fps dropped from 170 to 140. Some lags feel like PC is choking (lag duration for 3 seconds). Can't remember any lag with R7 270, W7. Antilag is turned on.
Borderlands 2 runs mostly fine. Haven't checked graphics settings. Probably not even on ultra. Sometimes fps drops to 40. Not ok.
Drivers are up to date. 3dmark 2011 gpu tests gave an uplift of 2-3x from 270. CPU fps slightly lower under W10. Have Windows.old folder from W7. All stuff of W7 before W10 installation, including graphics drivers (I guess disabled). Is it harmless or should I delete the folder? Before going to W10, I installed latest gpu drivers without DDU. I thought that Amd drivers can pick up new Amd card automatically. 3dmark 11 gave half performance for 6500 xt vs 270. I thought it was because of the lack of driver support under W7 for newer gpu drivers. After that W10. Also. PSU is old. Fortron Hexa 500W 80+ year 2012 (approximately 2000-2500 hours no more than 225W). Read somewhere that PSU can cause this. Probably much dust inside.
Windows has 100+ processes (50+ service host). 8GB single RAM. Windows at idle takes 30% ram. SSD and HDD are in good health. Haven't monitored cpu and gpu temps during gaming. CPU is 9 years old, probably same thermal paste. When opening afterburner GPU fans start working like turbine engines at 40%. During gaming fans are unnoticable (afterburner closed). Is my best bet formatting OS drive and install fresh windows? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

I see this as a mix of problems mainly tied to age. For example, 4440/8GB RAM/Fortron Hexa. My ideas would be a new power supply, at least doubling the RAM, and locating a 4670-4790 at a low price if possible. I likely wouldn’t invest much time or effort, since you can assemble a current i3 system for around $300 that should function well with that graphics card. If your storage solutions are similarly outdated, updating them would be a good move too.

You may need to perform a complete reset and reinstall of Win 10.
Upgrading from an older system can sometimes cause similar problems.

I understand the system is outdated. I've considered upgrading to an i7. The combined cost of RAM and PSU would be about 120€. My current PC is more affordable. It might not be worth it. So, it's time to think about a new setup. I'm doing a fresh install and hoping for the best. Thanks for your help.

This .dll file is utilized for playing F.E.A.R on contemporary systems while also being compatible with other titles. I apply it to numerous vintage games, restoring their original performance but enhancing speed with modern features. The Directinput fps improvement :: Condemned: Criminal Origins General Discussions This file addresses any FPS issues in the game, and since the link shared in the forums is no longer active, I discovered an updated version: simply place the DLL into the game's installation folder. It delivers remarkable results! https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files...t-fps-fix/ The Steam community also offers a concise summary: DirectInput FPS Fix – Quick install that resolves input-related lag in FEAR, its expansions, Condemned: Criminal Origins and similar titles. It’s straightforward to apply and doesn’t require manually turning off HID devices. For a fast start: move the file dinput8.dll into the appropriate game directory and test it. This adjustment can boost performance from around 15 FPS up to over 300 FPS simply by including the .dll file.

It's DDR3. It doesn't require much sensitivity compared to DDR4 or DDR5.
A matched dual channel setup with two 8GB modules costs around 25-30€.

Didn't mention one of the RAM slots is faulty. Only a single 16GB is feasible. Found it on a forum for 50€. RAM costs about 30€. PSU (Corsair CV550) is 60€. The DLL issue seems intriguing; I'll investigate further. Games didn't have issues with Windows 7 and R7 270. NFS Heat, being a modern title, isn't playable at all. Is 4440 really that outdated? Probably won't attempt games like Cyberpunk or Hogwarts Legacy (they require heavy CPU and GPU). Most titles should still work fine?
