I recently replaced an outdated GPU with a newer model (which was functioning just a week prior), but now my computer won't power on. The motherboard slots are correctly positioned, the power switch and front panel connections are in place, the 24-pin and CPU cables are securely attached to both the board and the PSU, and I even tested shorting the power switch pins with a screwdriver—no effect. When I flip the power button on the PSU, the GPU LEDs (ASUS Strix 1080) start lighting up, suggesting the PSU is still operational. I’m uncertain, but my previous GPU only had a 6-pin connector, while this one uses a 6 and 8-pin setup, so I added an extra 8-pin cable from my original PSU package. I don’t think that’s the problem, though it might be worth checking. Just to note, both the system and GPU were working before this issue. I haven’t attempted resetting CMOS yet—I’ll do that tomorrow. Otherwise, I might end up trying to reassemble everything just in case a cable was misplaced during installation. Specs: Ryzen 7 1700, 16GB DDR4, Ballistix RAM, MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon ASUS Strix 1080, EVGA Supernova G1 650W PSU, NXT S340 Elite 1, WD HDD, and one SSD.
Confirming the details: the extra 6+2 PCI-E cable matches the original EVGA G1 packaging, not another power supply. Testing the GPU on another PC works fine. The motherboard supports the newest BIOS version.
Thanks for your response! The extra power cable came from the original box, but I'm using an extension from Cable Mod. I didn’t realize the issue was with the cables themselves—just that I had been relying on the same set in my current setup. The GPU functions properly when it’s connected to another system, so it’s likely the motherboard isn’t running the latest BIOS. Since I haven’t updated it recently, it probably won’t help much.
Check the BIOS update notes online... For instance, the 7A32v1C version highlights better PCIe device support. Update the BIOS.
If the power switch pins aren't working, there are two possibilities to consider. The motherboard isn't forcing the PSU to activate. The PSU is being prompted to turn on, but it remains inactive. On the 24-pin connector, two pins that are connected together can signal the PSU to start up. This helps narrow down which pin is responsible. However, this method doesn't address all scenarios since the PSU itself isn't directly involved. It's a useful starting point.
I experienced a similar issue with an MSI B450M Bazooka after upgrading from the original MSI GT1030 to an ASUS Tuf GTX1650S. The new card didn’t boot at all. Reinstalling the original worked perfectly. After several hours of trying the new GPU, the board stopped functioning and needed to be returned to MSI for a repair that took 35-45 days. Once it was back, I faced significant stress. Later, I considered upgrading to a 5900X, but only after learning from support that a BIOS update could damage my board. Thanks to MSI’s shortcomings, my project was delayed by about six months and my expenses increased by at least 65%. I’ll never use MSI products again and won’t recommend them to anyone.
Likely not the problem, but it looks straightforward to eliminate by omitting them, if only to remove it from the list.
