Updated PC setup – sound effects flash on and off with brief electrical bursts
I recently assembled a new computer. So far, it’s been quite an ordeal (unfortunately). Important details: -13600k with an ASUS ROG Z690i motherboard. The sound travels from the board into a collection of Logitech speakers—some older models, with a small dongle that offers basic controls and a pass-through for headphones. I’ve used them for some time now, but they function perfectly. One mysterious audio gap has been bothering me: it feels like a strobe effect in the sound, but not steady. It pops in and out randomly, usually while playing games, often accompanied by loud bursts of static. Restarting the PC doesn’t resolve it, nor does closing the game or waiting. I learned recently that a RealTek tool called “Sonic Studio Virtual Mixer” might be linked to similar issues on ASUS boards. I spent some time trying to remove it, following instructions to install a different Realtek driver that avoids reinstalling SSVM—because any remnants could trigger it again. For a couple of days it seemed to work. But today, while playing a game, the audio suddenly cut out or pulsed, followed by intense static. I recorded the moment and thought it might be related to Shadowplay’s recording feature, which captures all system sounds. However, since the clip didn’t show the problem, I’m unsure if the issue is digital or physical. If it wasn’t captured, could it mean the hardware is faulty? I’m not sure what’s causing it, and I’m stuck without a clear solution.
This indicates the issue might lie in the analog audio path of the sound system. Common causes include computers connected to ungrounded outlets, which mainly affect microphones. It’s unclear whether the audio still reaches speakers without headphones plugged in, but testing headphone use could help. I also tried connecting headphones directly, assuming a 80-ohm cable was sufficient. My experience with Realtek audio and drivers led me to suspect broader problems, prompting me to explore an audio interface for easier switching between devices. A simpler fix might involve using a budget USB sound card available on Amazon for $5–$20, which could assist in identifying whether the problem is more general or specific to your setup.
PC is connected to a correctly grounded outlet. Earlier setup used the same power point without these problems (same audio configuration). Important note: my setup lacks front audio output. I’m plugging straight into the motherboard’s “Line Out” port. I’m hoping it will work again soon so I can test the DT770s directly through the audio jack or explore other fixes. The USB sound card is next if needed. I’m also processing a return merchandise authorization for my PSU because of excessive coil whine, hoping that resolves the issue. EDIT: I tried the suggested methods but they didn’t help much.
