Are you switching to a different cable than the one previously used for your laptop? If yes, consider testing another one. Are you connected via an ISP modem/router, or do you have your own setup? Does the updated network adapter reproduce the issue in Ubuntu?

Examine the Ethernet port closely. Are there any missing, bent, or damaged pins? Have you used another cable or connected a different PC to the same one? I suspect a physical issue is the problem, so some pairs might not work properly and you’ll be limited to slower speeds (10baseT uses fewer pairs than 100/1000baseT).
