Update Skyrim to the latest edition, regardless of auto-update settings.
Steam modified Skyrim because it wasn't launching automatically. EVEN when I kept it disabled, they still updated it. If Steam was already active, it respected that rule. This seems like a forced upgrade ploy. It's happened several times, and the downgrade patch helped restore things. Now it's not working properly, and trying to reach the latest AE SKSE means the game is older than the newest version. Without Skyrim or Fallout, I'd be stuck on an old PC. Unlike others, I won't complain about modders not doing their job. I'm furious with Steam for the situation they created. This would ruin my whole PC experience. I only played Skyrim and Fallout 4 fully. When mods change, I'll have to wait a week just to fix everything. That's exactly what I did this weekend for a new run, instead of enjoying the KOF XV demo on PS5. Now it feels like work. Rant over. But yeah, Steam—stop this."
Looks like you may still be able to get around it: https://www.pcgamer.com/skyrims-annivers...-expected/
Thanks for sharing. I thought it was just due to getting older. The updated SKSE version seems to handle most tasks for me, except ECE. The problem is that my old saves function correctly, but creating a new character causes the save to crash with a black screen. Luckily, I still have the Skyrim LE mod from 2011–2016 intact.
Downgrader managed the first attempt, but not the second. That’s why it turned into an issue. Then I just spent yesterday and this morning getting LE suitably modded. CTD city, which is why I usually stayed away from the game due to the rumors. If I walk a few feet (next cell), done.
They fixed SE so no more loading to black for me, but SKSE stopped working again. LE needs the vram to be handed by ENB or ENBoost. It has a execute file that handles vram. https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/38649 My game runs for about 5 seconds without this. You also need: SSME - Skyrim Startup Memory Editor https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50305 For level load doors. Safety Load https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/46465 For inns that NPCs have piled in. ShowRaceMenu Precache Killer https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/33526 To use showracemenu without CTDs. With these my LE game is more stable than my SE game.
I’m ready for the next part. Once I’m back in front of the PC, I’ll grab the others. LE causes screen tearing for me, and I’m seeing around 20 FPS in SE—no tearing yet, but I’m curious about how it’ll perform at higher resolutions. The 5800/3080Ti 4K specs are coming up soon. Also, I need to sort out the Proteus mod issue: the tint mask isn’t copying correctly, and the NPC is being replaced with a race menu preset.
I ceased editing LE in 2016 and back then I ran an i7 6700k with a GTX 980 ti achieving 1440p at 60fps. LE would still crash but stabilized after switching to the GTX 1080 ti. Proteus lacks tint masks; you can find them in Skyrim\Data\textures\actors\character\FaceGenData\FaceTint. You might be searching for Skyrim\Data\textures\actors\character\character assets\tintmasks. What you need is likely from the Temptress Race mod, Bijin Warmaidens and similar mods. I simply renamed and moved them to where I thought they belonged. Once I got the desired look, I was satisfied. Before mod managers existed, I edited Skyrim LE myself. With SE I relied on Nexus mod manager for formatter files, but most of it was done manually. My first Fallout 4 was also edited manually, though this year I cleaned it up using Nexus mod manager.
There's a depot downloader.. wow back in the day I had to do the whole console command thing, and they don't even tell you which the version is that you want... But at least it's an option i guess. OP pro tip: if you're modding always have backups. Yes, several, the more the merrier = )
