Hi everyone. I'm facing difficulties installing the Creators update. It doesn’t really suit my needs, but my system keeps trying to download and install it. The Windows Update works fine without problems; once it finishes, I click install, the setup runs, restarts occur, and then I encounter a BSOD. I’ve used the Windows Upgrade Assistant, tried repairing my OS with a USB drive, and run the sfc /scannow command to check for corruption. Still nothing. My hardware specs are: Asus x99 deluxe-II board, i7-6850k CPU, 32GB RAM at 3000MHz, Samsung 960 Pro M.2 NVMe SSD, and a GTX 1080. I’m sure those details cover everything. I wouldn’t have installed this update myself, but it keeps re-downloading after each failure, consuming all available bandwidth. Do you know of any way to install it without the BSOD? I suspect Microsoft might have missed including NVME support for its in-place updates.

Do you possess an additional USB drive that you can use to transfer files or create ISO images? (Or do you have a media creation USB available?)

I own the original drive from my Windows 10 purchase, but I also have extra storage options. I’m currently downloading an ISO, but I’d rather skip the full installation since I already have plenty of data!

You likely don’t have to, if you do, simply boot from a USB or install on a hard drive into Linux, move files there, and restart.

I plan to install the ISO on Windows first to check for fixes. If that fails, I'll boot from it and attempt a repair installation. If neither works, I'll consider a clean install, though I'm not sure if I'd like to do that.

Thanks, still waiting on the download. May be a little later before I give it a go. I'll update the thread after I try this.

For a fresh setup, always make sure to back up your data first. It seems like there’s a problem with the upgrade process on an important part—either it has an issue that prevents installation, or it needs an update before the OS change. Running a clean install with the newest Windows version (Creators Update) should fix this.

I performed a repair installation using a Windows 10 creators update ISO and had to leave it unattended for several hours. Upon returning, it installed Version 1703 without issues, so I bypassed the full clean install. I think missing drivers or support in the standard upgrade might be causing incompatibility with NVME devices.

It seems like you're reflecting on a recent development. This might be considered a limitation of very new technology.
