I recently upgraded my CPU from the standard Wraith Prism to a Mars Gaming MCPU220 (140W TDP) paired with Arctic MX4. The temperatures dropped noticeably by just 5°C compared to the previous cooler, which also used dry thermal paste. Now I’m concerned the motherboard might not be recording accurate readings. The new unit has a higher TDP and a bigger fan, so I expected a more significant difference—especially since I switched from the stock paste to the new one. This isn’t my first time making these changes, and I’ve built several systems myself, so I’m confident the paste was applied correctly and the cooler was installed properly. Any advice or insights? Maybe someone with the same board shared their experience?
The 105w is positioned at base clocks but doesn’t show the boosted power output. I cleaned it up, then reapplied paste—even using liquid metal—and still kept the stock cooler. It didn’t really change the temperatures much. Because it’s a Zen+ flagship CPU, staying cool is tough. Higher temps are normal, but it has a 95°C thermal limit. As long as you stay below that, the chip won’t slow down and will keep its speed.
I understand, so I need to arrange another cooler upgrade. For now, I'll stick with this one since the temperatures look good, though the fan is a bit bothersome. The RGB color effect is annoying, and the connector doesn't match my MoBo, meaning I'll likely have to replace it. Which type of fan works best for my new cooler—airflow or pressure? It's a Mars Gaming MCPU220, and the blades on the current unit have an unusual shape.
The MCPU220 comes with a standard 12cm fan secured by four screws, making setup straightforward. I’m open to swapping it out for another 12cm model, though I’m unsure if a more pressure-focused design would help. The original cooler is stored away until the next use. Please don’t say it’s superior to my new 140W unit.
Yes, it's 120mm. It's secured with four screws matching those on the case. I frequently create 3D models using a CPU-based engine; the Wraith Prism generates a lot of noise during those sessions and gets quite hot.
