Unusual sound coming from the GPU?
I'm experiencing this unusual sound coming from what appears to be the GPU. It's only audible when playing games, not on the desktop. The noise isn't like a fan, so I assume it's related to power consumption. Could you share the video link? I've been switching between the desktop and the game, but I don't play any high-end titles. This is really frustrating—especially since my rig is brand new and only about two months old. It runs Windows 11 with an RX 6800 and a 16GB RAM. How can I even request a return warranty for this kind of problem? Also, the noise happens intermittently, not constantly.
It seems like you're discussing potential fixes for coil whine in your gaming setup. You mention options like limiting FPS, using VSync, undervolting the GPU, or addressing power usage. The note also highlights that coil whine occurs when the GPU vibrates due to current flow, and playing power-hungry games can worsen it. Your suggestion to cap FPS is a practical approach.
It was already activated, which is why I see it most clearly. I turned it on through the AMD program. I plan to test it out soon and share my thoughts.
It's interesting that coil whine remains a concern for some. However, it's actually a specific form of coil whine. I recall using silicone adhesive on my GPU coils around ten years ago. Presently, I keep my gaming PC in a different room—typically the cooler one, as my HVAC system struggles in the sunroom. I play remotely using Parsec or Moonlight. In reality, I’d suggest simply investing in quality headphones and not overthinking it. It's just normal wear and tear on certain parts.
Thanks for sharing your experience. You haven’t encountered coil whine before, which is good news. Your old RX580 card paired with a nearly 12-year-old PC made these improvements noticeable. Since you use headphones to monitor sleep sounds, you’re picking up the subtle hum now. Because this was your first time hearing it, you weren’t sure if it was a flaw or an installation issue. You didn’t suspect power problems from the PSU either. Let me know if you’d like more tips on troubleshooting or reducing the noise.
