It seems like there isn't a perfect solution that works 100% of the time. If it just stops when I power it off or restart, I might be okay with it. More likely, I'll replace it with another one and sell the old one on eBay as lightly used. Thanks for your help!
It worked correctly after the fix. No changes were made, yet everything functioned properly. I also ordered a matching pair of RAM to swap in the missing units, but this situation is quite strange.
