Unusual problem with the ISP during upload only. Check Communications.
Hello, this could be a bit of a stretch, but I’m dealing with an issue with my ISP and this query seems aimed more at those who’ve set up an ISP network before. I reside in a small town in Saskatchewan and my provider, Access Communications, recently changed from offering 25Mbps down and 3Mbps up to a much higher 450Mbps down and 25Mbps up. I chose a 350Mbps down and 20 Mbps up plan because it offered better value compared to the 450Mbps option. The download speeds consistently match what’s advertised. The challenge arises during uploads – you experience two minutes at 20Mbps, followed by one minute at 3Mbps, then back to 20Mbps for two minutes, and so on. This pattern repeats without variation, consistently every day, every time. I’ve performed all standard network troubleshooting steps at home, and it doesn’t seem to be linked to my own configuration (except possibly the modem, which is a Hitron CGNM-2250). Another user in our community reported the same issue, with identical results. I’ve shared a graph of this behavior – the peaks are 20Mbps and the valleys are 3Mbps. I contacted the ISP and spoke with a support representative, who helped explain the problem and escalated it to their network infrastructure team, with me as the main point of contact for resolution. My concern goes beyond just pinpointing the fault; I’m unsure where to direct them to fix this. Have you faced a similar situation while setting up a network? If so, what steps did you take to resolve it? My setup is as follows: Hitron CGNM-2250 in gateway mode, Asus AX86U router. All my devices use Intel NICs – the desktop and laptop I tested are wired. I’ve experimented with various cables, moved COAX away from power lines, tried different computers. I’m confident it’s not my network since someone else at another home replicated the same issue. Appreciate your time and help.
The service clearly supports LTE across various environments. They provide both rural internet and urban cable options. The gateway automatically switches to LTE when needed, and using a wired device with their modem consistently yields the same outcome. Switching between their router and a personal router in gateway mode also produces identical results.
Are you receiving the signal through the phone line or cable like a TV? We experienced problems with our ISP years back due to interference, which forced them to switch us to a different frequency. My cousin has a more severe problem where uploads dropped to 36kbps (should have been 2mbps), making our video calls very slow. The fix was installing a new copper line from the house to the switchbox using high-quality wiring. Since then, we’ve had no issues. I’m not sure if this applies to your situation or how your internet arrives at home. A friend in Vancouver on one of the smaller islands had to rewire the whole neighborhood three years ago. Fortunately, it was all private property, so we did it ourselves except for the final section that needed a connection to the main network.
