Hi everyone. Someone reached out this morning reporting an unusual W7 issue on his old Dell Latitude (E6500). I wasn’t looking for any assistance since I was already performing a format or clean reinstall, but I’m still intrigued by the cause. He encountered problems with certain .NET packages after using Visual Studio, and the updates and restore points got messed up. Eventually, the machine would start without any desktop text, explorer info, or login screen—UI elements were completely unresponsive (like an empty right-click menu and a frozen taskbar). I first tried restoring points, but they were all corrupted. Since he needed his computer working quickly (and the hardware was solid thanks to Dell’s reliable Latitude line), I didn’t explore other options and went straight for a full reinstall. Still curious about this, and since I can’t easily recreate it, maybe you’re familiar with what happened? I also took some photos with my phone and have a rough video coming up if you want to check out. Spoiler: It’s a mystery worth solving.

Remove the graphics card drivers, turn off the system, and install the newest version. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, try another graphics card such as Intel’s built-in option, and check whether the problem persists. If it does, the hardware might be defective.

I mentioned I performed a full reinstall already (it worked fine), but thank you for your assistance. The issue seems to be related to a corrupted GPU driver. I attempted to download a new Intel Graphics driver (I managed to open Chrome from the desktop icon, which was the only workaround I found), but couldn't run it due to missing window options. It was the sole graphics card on the system.

It seems there might be issues with system files. Consider running sfc /scannow for a fix.
