Unusual GPU reset problem linked to power extension wires.
Unusual GPU reset problem linked to power extension wires.
There’s a strange problem affecting my GPU lately. The display would suddenly freeze, and the system would crash, restarting to Windows. After rebooting, the GPU driver would get corrupted, requiring DDU for fixes. Installing drivers manually is necessary, and using DDU seems to work better. It happened three times—twice while browsing and once during a game. I didn’t notice any lights on the PC when browsing but did so during gaming. One time, a power connector showed a red glow, indicating poor power or no power. I’m using custom extension cables instead of direct PSU connections, but they seem to be the cause. After removing them, the issue disappeared temporarily. It only occurred under load, and I’ve used these cables for almost two months without any problems. Could the PSU be failing or there’s another power issue?
It's feasible. Adding length and extensions raises resistance for the current. Certain PSUs employ 16-ounce cables on premium models while most extensions use 18-ounce, which further boosts resistance. You're correctly testing by connecting directly to your PSU, skipping the extensions to verify this. If it works, avoid using extensions and get new full PSU cables from a trusted supplier.
It sums up, but it doesn’t ease things when the GPU also uses 350W. I’m just hoping it’s not the cables causing the issue—it’s an RM850x, which is typically well-supported, so I’m praying it’s not the power supply.
For a better view on this, I own an HX850, which is the next level up from the RM series in terms of quality. Previously, I faced issues with my 3090, but now my HX1200 works perfectly without any problems. I also have replacement cables that are sourced and function flawlessly.
It's been more than a week since you switched back to using the standard PSU cables, and the issue hasn't returned, so it seems likely the problem was caused by something else. Please let me know if anything changes!
