Unusual GPU memory issue and game freezes while playing MW5 - Clans.
Hey everyone, I originally shared this in r/Mechwarrior5 but it got removed by the moderators. I'm posting now so others can assist and anyone looking for similar problems might find a solution. I purchased the game last night and have been facing constant crashes. Searching online didn't yield much info, so I started a thread to post updates. I contacted support, hoping they'll respond soon.
Problem: Game freezes because of low video memory.
Specs: 13900k (no overclocking, not replaced but no degradation before the latest BIOS), Asus Z790 Hero, 64GB DDR5 6400 RAM, MSI 4090 Gaming X Trio (no overclock), LG 27GP950-B.AUS 27" 4K monitor, newest NVIDIA drivers.
It started crashing almost immediately after launching. I closed background apps to free up VRAM and tried adjusting settings—cutting frame rate to 120, enabling v-sync, but nothing helped. The GPU usage spiked to 98% on the loading screen, with P-Core usage over 150%. After turning off my second monitor, it managed the first mission at medium settings, but then crashed again. I tried lowering the frame rate further and reinstalling, but it still failed at the end.
It reminds me of a video JayzTwoCents did about New World a few years back regarding high GPU usage. While not exactly the same, my experience matches that pattern. I'm considering limiting the frame rate to 60 or lower, reinstalling the game, or checking for CPU issues if it doesn't resolve. I'll keep you posted with any updates from Piranha.
Pics attached if anyone has suggestions—I really think this game could be great once fixed.
The high utilization rate is exactly what you're aiming for, and you'll notice it in a live cutscene or the main menu when rendered by the system rather than pre-recorded video. Focus on checking the frame rates during menu navigation or scenes. In New Worlds scenarios (as mentioned), the problem stemmed from pre-rendered clips and videos playing over the menu and loading screens, causing framerates to spike significantly on powerful hardware—especially the 3090 series, which could fail due to manufacturing flaws like solder issues or power limits. As for solutions, keep the latest microcode updates in mind (versions 0x129 and 0x12B). If you applied the first update, test again; if not, try updating once more. Disabling XMP might resolve RAM-related crashes, or you may need a compatible board from the QVL list. If those don't work, run stress tests on the CPU to see if Intel suggested specific procedures to detect lasting damage. Extended warranties are available for 13th and 14th Gen i9s, making it easier to return defective units.
I doubt that your 4090 is lacking on the video memory side. Sure, you got a big scary 4k monitor but if a 4090 can't manage that game, no GPU will. I'd start by setting your video resolution to 1080p and enabling V-sync (and G-sync). If you still got the issue, there is something wrong with the game or Windows. Maybe try using DDU and reinstall the Nvidia drivers. You tried enabling G-sync or V-sync ? That way, the GPU will limit the FPS of the game to the refresh rate of the monitor. You can also try to limit FPS within the game but it should not be necessary with the sync options. If nothing works yet, I suggest trying to go with a fresh install of Windows. Either wipe your boot drive or install a blank one. I know this is the nuke option, but you never know when you tried all you can think of already. Once you find a stable configuration, you can go up from there. It is possible that this particular game with a 4K high refresh rate monitor overwhelms even a 4090. I remember Cyberpunk and its insane requirements at launch. Good luck !
