Unusual Ethernet link issues – data sniffing problems.
Hello! I'm facing a curious setup. My jazz band has several small "musicians" linked to a main hub using either RJ45 or RJ11 connections. I'm trying to capture the data coming through one RJ45 port (to the drummer) by connecting the central unit to my computer with an Ethernet cable. Wireshark isn't picking up anything. My concern is whether the cable between the drummer and the hub might be transmitting data in a purely analog way, without any digital packets. Could that be why nothing appears? Also, could I detect raw voltage signals on my own RJ45 port if the information isn't being captured by Wireshark? Thanks for your assistance!
I suspect it's just using the RJ45 cable and not Ethernet at all, possibly another protocol. Your network port likely can't communicate with that device. If you need to inspect the signal, disassembling it might help if a wiring diagram isn't available. I don’t have any online references for it, so taking it apart could provide valuable insights. Otherwise, I’d use a scope and multimeter to examine each pin.
