I have a Spectrum connection with 100 Mbps download and 15 Mbps upload. Around two months ago I began seeing intermittent drops. Initially I thought it was due to WiFi usage. A month later, when I connected my PC via Ethernet for gaming, I noticed inconsistent lag spikes—sometimes three in thirty minutes, other times none at all, regardless of time of day. I asked my family members on the same network; my brother also reports lag during gaming sessions, and my aunt experiences delays with her phone and YouTube videos. After a power cycle on the modem, nothing changed. I reset the router to factory settings and updated its firmware, but the issue persisted. Spectrum reported only 0.02% packet loss, which was within normal limits. I described all my troubleshooting steps, and they upgraded the modem, yet the problem continued. I attempted to reduce bandwidth usage by disconnecting devices, but even with just wired connections, spikes remain. I considered plugging directly into the modem, thinking it might resolve the issue, though I felt it was unnecessary since the service seemed fine. I’ve explored all my networking knowledge and still have no clear solution. What might be causing this, and how can I resolve it?

Just to ease your worries, I experienced the same problem too. Over the past year or so, playing games—especially MOBAs—would cause significant disruptions. My ping would spike dramatically, sometimes jumping from 30-40ms to around 130ms or even 200ms consistently, with occasional timeouts. I checked my connection by running tests on Google and the game servers themselves, but the spikes didn’t align properly. I changed modems multiple times, used different routers, added an access point for both wired and wireless, yet the issue persisted. Eventually, I switched to Windstream Kinetic and have been stable ever since. P.S., knowing you're in the Charlotte area might help a bit.

I’m not sure if I’ll receive a reply, but this discussion really confirms my own situation. Thanks for sharing your experience with me. I’m located just outside Charlotte, using Spectrum, and I face the same problems. There’s a steady ping around 20-30ms, followed by occasional spikes up to 100+ ms, which I’ve tested using command prompt ping commands to my router/ISP. I’ve searched through several threads, articles, and more, but haven’t found any solution. I’ve also talked to my dad about it, and he’s correct—Spectrum won’t help unless there’s a major problem like extremely slow or unstable connectivity. To them, one random spike isn’t worth fixing. Sure, they might replace the modem/router or cable, but if that doesn’t work (which is common), it’s essentially a waste of time. In the end, it feels like trying to revive something already dead. I could try swapping parts or contacting support, but honestly, Spectrum isn’t worth the effort. Sadly, my dad probably wouldn’t switch providers either—he just needs his computer to work. That’s all I have to say. If you read this and have any updates, please let me know. Cheers, happy 2020.

I don't have a modem, but I can help you find information about it if you tell me more about your setup.
