Hey tech enthusiasts! Following my recent switch from a Gen4 i5 with older components to a newer Gen9 i5, I’ve noticed some unusual clicking sounds coming from the system. Initially, I just turned it off quickly to protect the hardware, but this time I decided to investigate further. The noise continues even after shutting down completely—watching the video captured it clearly. It happens after Windows exits and only stops once all fans have stopped.

My setup includes:
- Asus Prime Z390-A motherboard
- 16GB DDR4 RAM
- Intel Core i5-9600K processor
- EVGA 750 G2 power supply
- Water cooling unit (Corsair Hydro H100i)
- Random SSD boot drive
- Three old HDDs (over five years each)

Possible causes I’m considering:
- Power supply unit (less likely since it wasn’t modified, but could be drawing more power)
- AIO water cooler (might be vibrating or having issues)
- Motherboard VRMs (the clicking sounds are unusual but not impossible)

I’m open to any suggestions and appreciate your help in diagnosing this issue!

Disconnect the power supply from the hard drives and observe if the sound diminishes.

It was a solid decision. I tested the system without them for an entire day, then another full day with just the oldest drive taken out. Interestingly, the noise disappeared when I placed it in an external housing (toaster style). I managed to retrieve most of the data except one file. It seems vertical mounting reduces strain on the actuator arm. The sticker indicates October 2008. Nearly 14 years ago. This vehicle was my primary drive back when I used an Athlon64. What a ride! RIP
