Hi all.
My Ryzen 9800X3D setup has changed unexpectedly, and the CPU temperature spikes to 90 degrees during idle. This never happened before—I was optimized before and it worked well for weeks. Now it’s very unusual. I restored everything to stock and it functions perfectly. Another point: did you perform a CPU overclock with a +200mhz boost clock override? The PBO is active, but the clock isn’t running stably at 5400 mhz?

At 90°c during idle, the process ceased once PBO was removed. The overclocking method wasn’t clear—did you check the core clock frequencies while it ran hot? Even with PBO enabled, the CPU shouldn’t consistently hit maximum frequency; it should only increase when necessary and for the required number of cores. When boosting the 9800X3D, begin by adjusting the curve optimizer to around -15 across all cores (starting at -5 and reducing in steps of 5 until stable), then enable manual PBO and add 100 or 200 MHz to the boost clock. If stability remains an issue, consider raising the scalar factor, though this may be less effective if the optimizer is set correctly. Also, switch Windows power plan to performance during these adjustments. Maximum speed should only be reached when the CPU truly needs it; constant 90°c operation suggests a problem. I’ve configured mine at +100 MHz with -15 curve optimizer, and under heavy load it stays below 80° (about 40° at idle).

i only configured +200 mhz boost clock override, scalar is auto, co is auto because i don’t want to make any changes and pbo is on. in 2 weeks after applying this oc, the cpu is still fine with no temperature spikes, though during 90 degree idle i didn’t get a chance to check. i set pbo on, scalar auto, and boost clock override at 200 mhz, co auto. everything seems normal now except during 90 degree idle.

If you apply a 200 MHz boost without any curve optimization, you're likely to overheat under medium to heavy CPU usage. I now realize that this 90c only occurred once before. It might have been due to an update or a Defender scan, or another program consuming significant resources, which pushed the CPU close to 90c—something expected given the 200 MHz PBO boost and lack of curve optimization.
