Hey everyone, since July I started building my PC and I encountered some unusual lag that changes when I add more fans. Sorry for the typo—my phone’s autocorrect uses German spelling. Every time I launch the computer it freezes twice, usually for about half a second. The lag gets worse as I install more fans, and after a short while games become unplayable. With fewer fans installed they run smoothly until the CPU overheats.
What I’ve tried so far:
- Tried each hardware part individually and tested it
- Verified compatibility with Windows 10 and 11
- Disabled the GPU
- Tested Expo and RAM with MHz set to CPU specs
- Checked RAM availability
- Installed correct drivers
- Suggested BIOS settings for the CPU
- Adjusted power settings
- Reduced GPU voltage
- Tested different mice, keyboards, headphones
- Possibly more about my specs: RTX 4070, AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 850W Bequiet, Samsung M2, ASRock Phantom Gaming B650, 32GB NVMe SSD, 6000MHz DDR4, Be Quiet Dark Rock V4, B4500 fans

If this applies, you might experience increased lag when adding more fans. Examine your cabling and motherboard connections. Test without power adapters, using different outlets. If the motherboard or its plugs are touching the case, there could be a grounding problem affecting fan signals and causing system lag. After reviewing the cables, confirm RAM is placed in slot A2 B2 and that the expo setting is off. Disable any overclocking or undervolting during testing. Also, download HWinfo64 and monitor CPU and GPU temperatures.
For testing I fully removed the fans, yet lag persisted at startup. The machine is plugged straight into the wall—just monitors aren’t connected for now—but I tried another adapter. I’m not sure the mainboard was set up wrong because I’ve rebuilt it several times and this was my last professional build.
