I reside in the UK and own a Plusnet Hub One router (standard ISP model). My main PC and Xbox connect via Ethernet at peak performance, around 60 Mbps—the top speed my provider offers. Yet on my laptop using WiFi I often get less than 20 Mbps. This is unusual since I switch to Ethernet when I need faster internet, but streaming and browsing still lag or disconnect entirely. The issue usually resolves if I briefly switch the device to airplane mode, though this disrupts my Netflix sessions every few minutes. Websites also freeze mid-load. I’ve adjusted router channels and ensured dual-band usage, but nothing works. I’m willing to invest around £150 in a router or mesh system, but want clarity: will this fix the problem or is another factor at play, like nearby interference? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

You might experience faster speeds if you placed your device closer to the router. The connection could still weaken as distance increases.

When I'm in the same room, it runs a bit quicker yet remains disconnected from the internet.

It seems like the router isn’t working properly. Since I’m not in the UK, I can’t say whether it’s legal to change providers or update firmware. Could you clarify if your ISP supports switching devices or performing updates?

My internet service provider permits router upgrades, yet we encountered similar issues with another provider. After researching, it seems both used identical routers under different settings. I believe this might be the root cause, though I wasn’t certain whether purchasing a new router or setting up a mesh network would be better.

I begin with a fresh router, one you can manage yourself—perhaps using DD-WRT (if you're ready and the ISP allows). If the problem continues occasionally, consider returning the device to check for other causes.
