I have two desktops and three laptops running valid Windows OS versions. I’m considering a new computer for my mom and came across an article suggesting you don’t need a product key to install and use Windows 10. It seems Microsoft supports this approach, but I want to know if it’s allowed and if it actually works. Thanks!

Starting with Windows 8, a Windows setup stays active even if not used for a while. In Windows 10, the main restriction is the lack of options to adjust personal settings. Additionally, after extended use, a faint watermark appears in the lower right corner, though it's almost invisible. This is perfectly acceptable.

The agreement requires you to have a license for the software. There are no exceptions. Running copyrighted programs without authorization is always illegal. A license is essential, not just permission. Do you believe Microsoft values your concerns?

It's a brand new machine. Upgrading from scratch seems impossible... I'm puzzled. If they allow free WIN10 ISO downloads, install WIN10 without a key, and let you run an unactivated version, how can this be considered illegal? It wouldn't be like downloading a pirated copy and using it.

I tried to make it as clear as possible. This content is protected by copyright. You need permission to use it, which involves purchasing a license. Using it without permission violates copyright laws and is illegal. They do provide the ISO files, but that doesn’t mean it’s free software or open for sharing. Microsoft does this to maintain their market dominance. If you’re seeking a free OS, consider options with licenses like GPL, BSD, or Apache.

You're correct, when it isn't enabled it's allowed. The issue likely stems from using a KMS activator.
