Unexpected slowdown in frame rate across games – unclear starting point for diagnosis or troubleshooting.
In recent days, my performance dropped significantly from solid frame rates to around 50fps. Games like Sons of The Forest, Star Citizen, and Cities Skylines 2 all became unstable. I’ve checked various monitoring tools while playing to identify issues, but no signs of CPU, GPU, or RAM shortages were found. Usage remains balanced between CPU and GPU, rarely surpassing 40-60%, with temperatures staying between 45-55°C. My attempts to fix things included updating drivers, rolling back changes, confirming background processes, checking monitor settings, adjusting graphics settings, and testing internet speeds (ranging ±900 Mbps on fiber). I’m not as tech-savvy as before, so I’m unsure what else to try. Could the latest Windows updates have affected my system? Thanks for your help!
Are there any background processes consuming excessive power? You noticed this leading to noticeable delays, with overall CPU activity staying low while certain apps spike to around 10W out of a 30W capacity. For example, after deleting a large 40 GB file from Utorrent, it continued attempting to re-download it in the background, which I later discovered was due to storage running out. Checked Task Manager and saw high power usage in the dark red area under power consumption. You also experienced similar lag issues.
Initially I believed OBS was affecting my frame rates (even though it wasn’t before), so I tried using OBS with streaming disabled. The impact was minimal—only a slight drop of 1-3 fps at most. My system remained light during streaming, which is unusual. Previously, everything ran smoothly in games and streaming, especially after getting the build in January. Suddenly, last week everything changed; FPS dropped sharply without any noticeable performance issues or high usage.
Sudden shifts may indicate issues stemming from recent activities, such as new installations, updates, or toggled settings. Intel's chipset drivers and Windows could also play a role.
Rams are running smoothly at 2000mhz with minimal usage spikes (64gigs). Recent updates from a couple of weeks ago might be the reason, but it’s hard to tell since nothing obvious changed. It’s likely worth checking what you’re monitoring, as everything seems to be functioning well.
They're promoted for 4000Mhz, which could help revert the Windows setup, though I'm not sure. If you inspect the physical machine, verify all connections are secure and undamaged, and consider testing the RAM as a next step.
