My computer has been running games decently for a long time, maintaining approximately 60 frames per second on reduced visual settings. Recently, I've experienced occasional dips in performance, frequently dropping to 10 frames per second or less, especially during intense game moments. I've confirmed that my graphics drivers are current and attempted to diagnose the issue, but haven’t found any clear solutions. My graphics card utilization, as measured by Afterburner, remains consistently around 30%, and my central processing unit doesn’t appear to reach its maximum capacity according to system monitoring. I'm unsure of what steps to take next.

Here’s my DirectX diagnostic report: https://pastebin.com/fvvFnxAA

I would appreciate any assistance you can provide, thank you!

Unexpected dips in performance resemble a separate problem, even though the 30% GPU utilization suggests a CPU limitation. It’s possible the machine is experiencing thermal slowdown, which would reduce processor speeds and cause poor gaming results – I've encountered this previously with an FX 8320 system.

If the issue is recent and affecting games that previously performed well, it could simply signify a need for thorough cleaning of the CPU cooler and replacement of the thermal adhesive between the processor and cooler, typically required every five years as the compound loses its effectiveness.

Examining motherboard temperatures while gaming could also be beneficial; overheating VRMs on the motherboard can trigger CPU clock reductions. Improving case airflow with appropriate intake and exhaust fans is a common solution, and temporarily opening the case can provide relief as well.

I appreciate your assistance. Could you advise on whether replacing my central processing unit would improve my graphics card’s performance? The decline in frames has been ongoing, but it's become significantly worse recently. I’m observing intermittent dips in the frame rate followed by brief recoveries, and I'm uncertain if this indicates overheating. I plan to clean my CPU cooler and apply fresh thermal paste since my computer is approximately four years old. I’ll let you know if these changes resolve the issue. Thank you once more!

I believe you'd experience improved graphics processing speed by utilizing a more powerful processor. This would necessitate an updated system configuration – specifically, a new motherboard alongside the CPU and RAM. Beginning with some maintenance on your processor’s cooling system would be advisable, as temperature fluctuations are a common thermal pattern (it will decrease processing speeds to manage heat, then cool down before returning to its boosted state and subsequently heating up again, repeating this cycle).

If considering an upgrade, a new AMD Ryzen 3100 or 3300X processor paired with a B550 motherboard and DDR4 memory would likely be an excellent choice. These options represent current value leaders in gaming processors, delivering a significant performance enhancement compared to your existing FX series CPU.
