I have an i7-6700k with a 4.7ghz overclock. I checked my frame rates by adjusting settings and resolution. I purchased a 2070 Super for 1080/1440 gaming, hoping to reach 144fps. Some games I thought would be manageable are actually struggling. I’m unsure about CPU usage and how much I can fix without spending a lot. Currently, I have 64GB DDR4 2133 RAM, so I’d need to upgrade to 32GB at 3600MHz if switching to a Ryzen. My motherboard only supports a 7700K, which isn’t worth it. In the games I tried, I saw 30-40% GPU usage and sometimes the card would downclock to 1605MHz even though the percentage was low at 1080p. The CPU shows 40-50% utilization but doesn’t fully engage half the cores. I expected, if usage was around 50%, the game would use more than half of its threads or logical processors. I work in UE4 and value core counts for compiling and shaders, so upgrading to a Ryzen 3950X or 3700X would make sense. But after spending a lot on the 2070 Super and other parts, I’m left with limited budget for another CPU. Most people say a 6700K won’t get much better in games compared to this model. Is there something wrong with my setup? And what affordable upgrades should I consider? A 3600MHz seems okay but isn’t expected to help much in most titles.

At 4.7 ghz overclock there’s no likelihood 6700k will be the bottleneck for a 2070 super THAT much. In reality, if CPU usage is only half, another factor is likely involved. Could you share your complete system details?

Certain games rely heavily on CPU performance. Even with moderate CPU usage, a slow GPU can become the limiting factor.
