Uncertain about the M.2 details of the ROG STRIX Z790-E GAMING WIFI II
The instructions seem inconsistent. The manual states that on page 8/9 the M.2 slots connect directly to the CPU, while page 26 under the M.2 heading says the M.2_2 slot passes through the chipset. This creates confusion about which slot should handle the GPU and CPU paths.
These Intel CPUs offer 20 usable lanes, typically using x4 to M.2 with the remainder for PCIe slots. When a PCIe slot shares with M.2_1, M.2_2 might be the lane source. Edit: This could align AMD specifications on paper. Zen 4/AM5 allows x16 5.0 PCIe plus x8 5.0 NVMe. Intel supports x16 5.0 PCIe and x4 4.0 NVMe. The lanes must be taken from PCIe to access the second NVMe 5.0 on the CPU.
It required some adjustments in both directions, yet an error was present in the manual.
