I made some changes to my Windows 8.1 on August 3rd, but after that my CPU started overheating, so I removed those updates the next day. Now when I try to update, Windows shows a locked-down version and keeps checking for updates. My internet seems fine, but it’s still frustrating. Can you help me fix this without reinstalling Windows?

I needed to apply all updates for 8.1, including the optional ones, before I could install Windows 10. Consider reinstalling those updates and restarting your PC afterward, then trying Windows 10 right away. How hot was your computer getting during that process?

Sure, I tried that too, but I had to install the updates first. It was really frustrating. It seems like my computer might not like me because I kept putting it under heavy use.

It's clear what's going on here. I'm always awake and ready for whatever comes next.

When i click on check for updates, the progress bar keeps running without stopping, and no changes appear. I removed those updates you mentioned, but now nothing is displayed—it’s just continuing to check.

The definitely try that tool if you haven't. It how I had to install Windows 10 on both of my systems. Mostly because I was impatient and didn't want to wait until it told me it was ready.
