This morning I saved the newest BIOS update from MSI’s site and installed it via the built-in flash feature on a USB drive. After finishing and restarting the PC, I lost access to everything, including the BIOS menu. The mainboard displays several debug lights, and the CPU LED was lit. I’ve tried fixing it a bit, but now I’m left with the flash button on the board using another USB stick. I’ve used four different drives, but none worked—each had a different BIOS version than the one installed this time. The manual specifies only CPU Power 1 and 24-pin power connectors should be connected for flashing. I removed all else except my M.2 SSD, though a screw is stuck because the head is broken, making it impossible to remove. The best outcome was the red BIOS flash LED flashing twice before turning on permanently. I’m unsure what those two flashes meant. Two suggestions: get a fresh USB stick (some say the board is sensitive to different ones) and take out the M.2 SSD (tried everything I can, so I’ll need a local expert for the screw). Any other issues? Here’s my setup: Mainboard: MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge Wifi CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X GPU: AMD RX Vega 56 (founders edition) RAM: GSKILL RIPJAWS 2x 8GB DDR4 M.2 SSD: some Samsung EVO Edited October 27, 2022 by manfedmbm

Ensure the flash drives use FAT32 formatting. Verify that the BIOS file on the USB drives has been renamed to 'MSI.ROM'.

I followed the instructions for setting up the stick, and it seems any stick will work. I’m not sure which option is better now, since both seem similar. Appreciate the quick response!

Plugging the USB in and pressing the flash back button triggers a blinking LED on the motherboard.

It flashes twice before showing a steady glow. The CPU diagnostic indicator remains active. Updated October 27, 2022 by manfedmbm

How much time pass before attempting a restart? It could also help to remove the CMOS battery for about 30 seconds and unplug the power supply to reset it to its default state. Useful for a fast check.

I typically wait about 30 seconds, but I can't restart because the power cable isn't plugged in. Instead, I just turn the switch on the PSU. I've also taken out the battery for a while, but I'm willing to try again.

It may require about five minutes for the bios to load. The PC must remain powered while the PSU is on, but it should be off when you connect the USB and press the flash button. Give it a moment to work properly. USB2.0 connections appear more reliable than versions 3.0 or higher.

I understand it can take some time to load the BIOS, but the BIOS only activates when the red LED pulses for five minutes. My unit only flashes twice and then stays on permanently. Right now, the only way to get anything running is using the BIOS flash button; nothing else works. Everything seems off, the PSU is connected and I press the flash button. I'm using a USB 2.0 device.

Windows occasionally fails to format USB devices properly using the format utility. You might try restoring the original MBR. Run CMD with admin privileges. Enter 'DISKPART', then 'List Disk'. Note the USB identifier (size helps identify it). Type 'select disk x' followed by the number. Proceed with 'Clean', then 'Create Partition Primary', set to 'Active', and choose 'Format fs=Fat32 Quick'. After that, remove the MSI bios and rename the drive. This can resolve issues with USB formatting that affect certain flashback tools.
