Unable to start Windows from an SSD that uses PCIe adaptation.
Hello. I'm switching my PC to use an SSD instead of a traditional HDD. Since my motherboard (Asus P8H61-MX USB3) doesn't have any M.2 slots, I connected a PCIe x1 adapter. After some issues installing Windows on the SSD, it worked fine, but it still can't boot from the SSD. The BIOS recognizes the SSD, and Windows installs there. Thanks for your assistance.
It won't start unless the BIOS can handle it. This adapter lacks a bootROM—it's not an SCSI or RAID card. The hardware is likely outdated and can't boot from it. This model is an H61. For better performance with DDR3 RAM, consider a pre-owned Skylake board with a newer CPU. Otherwise, the only choice is a SATA SSD.
