Unable to set up Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on Threadripper 5955WX
Hello, I just bought new equipment for a machine with six RTX 5090 graphics cards. When trying to set up Ubuntu on the server, it freezes and doesn’t start properly when I boot from a flash drive. The system locks up at the boot menu right away. In contrast, installing Windows works fine until it restarts after about five minutes. I’ve listed my specs below, and someone might be able to assist with this issue. Hardware details: CPU – AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5955WX; RAM – 32 GB DDR4 ECC; MBO – Pro WS WRX80E-SAGE SE WIFI; GPU – 6x TUF-RTX5090-32G-GAMING. I also shared some images if they help with WhatsApp Video on June 30, 2025 at 12:51 PM.
Have you tried booting with only one card installed? it's not very common to have 6 and it's an LTS release from 3 years ago so maybe it's messing with the drivers built in to the installer By the way, any specific reason you're not going for 24.04 or even a more recent non LTS release? This being brand new models you might benefit from running a new kernel
Thank you for your message. I've tested using one GPU on a single card, but it works fine. However, with multiple cards it doesn't function properly. I'm planning to try Ubuntu 24.04 now and will let you know the outcome once I have the results.
I'm looking at how to get enough power. Six 5090 units would need about 3600W each, which is a lot. The video shows two power supplies, but it's unclear what their capacity is.
I didn't realize at first, but I now understand the cards are placed on riser cables and some even use two combined risers. I would steer clear of double risers if I were you, since the PCIe bus could struggle to maintain its bandwidth with such long unshielded extensions, possibly causing instability—this might also explain the crash in Windows. Checked memtest86 results to detect any errors. Verified CPU mounting with the official tool. It seems improper seating can cause contact problems with the motherboard socket, potentially leading to issues. Testing various RAM and PCIe slots might help identify this problem if successful on some configurations.
I installed the CPU with the provided tool and Windows is working, but the problem is only with Ubuntu and Linux that I planned to use.
When you can spot grub, follow this guide: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us...ux-booting. If not, consider updating to the newest Ubuntu version to resolve compatibility issues with newer software.
