Unable to set up jack in Kali Linux
The CD installation source appears properly commented out, but you're missing the Kali Linux repositories. Refer to the official documentation at http://docs.kali.org/general-use/kali-li...positories for details.
I'm not sure if it's still BackTrack. It should work with Debian unstable. You can install software built for that version. No issues with using it on an old laptop, extra hard drive, or another machine.
BackTrack showed more flexibility than Kali Linux. It could have been adapted into a broader-purpose operating system. Kali Linux represented a shift in identity, while BackTrack retained its original name. Kali Linux also faces compatibility issues with Debian and other Debian-based systems, which are designed to maintain security and complexity.
I’m not familiar with that. It seems some tools require non-free packages since not all are open source. Regarding the operating system, it claims to use Debian sources with little change, as outlined in their documentation. I don’t have a strong preference for Kali; it mainly serves as a live CD to test software, and the repos often go down, making Debian or Ubuntu more reliable.
Kali is built on Debian. It helps you master apt package management. Why Kali specifically? I don’t really see any practical benefit it brings to the world of distros. You can usually install any app available on Kali onto other Debian or Ubuntu-based systems. I’ve interacted with over 40 different distros this year. In my view, sticking with a major, well-known distro is better. The ideal distro doesn’t really exist, but choosing one of the more stable and supported ones will likely reduce your troubles most of the time. When problems arise, they tend to get resolved faster.
