Hi
I'm not going all the way overclocking, but I want to increase the threshold for thermal throttling on my laptop GPU (MX250, 25W). By default it's too low (65C), so I'm planning to raise it to 75 or 80. Nothing too extreme.

The temperature limit option is hidden in Afterburner and nothing else seems to allow it. However, the same setting works in ASUS GPU Tweak II, which confirms it's not a hardware issue—it might just be enabled differently. I'm unsure how to activate it, but it looks possible.

If needed, I can stick with using GPU Tweak, though it feels a bit subpar overall. For safety, I've already lowered the CPU voltage and reduced its turbo clock, as that seems to be the main source of heat. I'd also like to try slightly undervolting the GPU, but Afterburner only lets me add voltage offsets—not reduce them. GPU Tweak can handle that, though it doesn't let me decrease the value.

Any advice would be appreciated!

It's unlikely to be a major issue for you, but your CPU and GPU handle heat separately. Your CPU temperature won't affect GPU temperatures much. Therefore, CPU voltage settings won't impact GPU performance. This seems like a typical problem with afterburner. The advice I had is to upgrade or try GPU Tweak.

I don't know for sure whether it will function on your laptop or not, but I've heard about a tool called ThrottleStop that does similar things.

Yea, I'm using TS to do the tweaking on my CPU, sadly doesn't have any options for discrete GPU!
🙁
As far as I can tell they have separate fans but shared heat pipes, a bad but common design. Certainly when stress testing the CPU for stability after undervolting, the GPU temp shoots up by 20C or so to near the default throttle temp despite having 0 load itself.
I'll take a look at the beta for afterburner, thanks. Keeping GPU Tweak as an option of last resort, it's mega buggy.

Yes, vendor-provided free overclock programs often work inconsistently. Over time I've realized that even using them on my builds can cause issues, particularly with ASUS components. Regarding your heat-pipe fix, the only advice I can give is to maintain a very clean environment using compressed air. Any dust accumulation becomes an issue, especially when you need the device to perform at its full potential. Good luck!
