I managed to set up Lubuntu on my old laptop and added VLC along with the libdvd codec. But the DVDs keep not playing. What should I do next?

No, I haven't used any other program besides GNOME videos.

You don’t own a DVD ROM and you’ve already removed it. When it was installed, it kept showing the same “unsupported format” error (though your PS4 runs it just fine).

Confirming you have a DVD, not a Blu-Ray. PS3 and later support Blu-Ray discs, but a DVD reader won't work (only DVDs and CDs).

It's a disc from 2002, likely not a Blu-ray player.

Doesn’t specify the format, but suggests it isn’t a Blu-Ray. Scratches on old discs can make them unreliable and cause failure over time. Have you checked other discs to eliminate the laptop’s hard drive as the problem?

I experienced this situation before. I switched to using celluloid. Note: It might also relate to a disc format or drive problem. Consider what Zando_ mentioned.
