I'm having trouble getting Steam to work on Ubuntu 16.04. I've checked all the top results online, but nothing seems to install properly. Sometimes it appears in the left menu and I can click on it, but clicking store or library doesn't help. It just closes after a short time. I also can't install the Teamspeak client, even though the package runs correctly, but no installation prompts appear. I'm really new to Linux and don't understand why this is so difficult. Also, when trying a test in the Phoronix suite, it asks for a number but just says "select task: 1" without accepting any input.

I recall it took a while to get Steam running on Ubuntu, but I can't remember the solution. It seems to have involved using console commands after looking online.

I faced comparable problems on Mint, so I had to remove Steam and then clean up some folders manually. This happened after everything was working well but broke following an update.

This would be the initial step I'd take to start a program... It appears to be installing, yet when I run it, it just doesn't react or launch the GUI.

Type "steam post" into the terminal to display its output.

Verify installation by executing the commands. Then launch it in the terminal to check for any issues.

I executed all commands with sudo. It’s unclear what additional permissions might interfere. When I launched Steam, I received an error: "Running Steam on ubuntu 16.04 64-bit STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically [2016-08-19 11:41:51] Startup - updater built Aug 16 2016 19:47:11 SteamUpdateUI: An X Error occurred X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)"
