You're experiencing a problem where the BIOS settings might be interfering with Windows XP installation from a USB drive. It sounds like the BIOS could have a specific configuration that affects XP but not other operating systems. Checking and adjusting the BIOS options related to boot order, memory settings, or hardware compatibility might help resolve this issue.

Configure the startup order in the BIOS to load from the USB drive instead of the CD or hard drive.

Currently, it seems the best option might shift... Edit: I admit I was wrong. Vista is likely to be disappointing.

It's a CNC controller; newer operating systems seem unstable with the software I use, especially regarding parallel port settings. I don’t feel the need to invest since XP works well for me. As far as I know, everything is configured correctly—I can boot from USB on my drive using Windows 8 and another drive running Ubuntu smoothly. Since the machine isn’t connected to a network, I’m not concerned about any issues.

What XP service pack are you using? It seems the setup doesn’t support USB, which could be the reason. Perhaps Service Pack 2 on the disk would be a solution—this is the version I haven’t tested yet.

Its SP3, I can boot to the XP install on other computers, just not this one, so I know the USB works. But on the flip side I can boot into Win8 install on this computer, so the BIOS settings for booting to a USB are correct... I'm just thinking there is a weird setting I am missing somewhere maybe. It is a very old AMD motherboard. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk

Sure thing. The main issue here is the very old motherboard, so nothing can be changed easily. I could suggest turning off HPET (though it seems to be an Intel feature) or disabling UEFI mode, but those were more relevant after XP and Windows 7/8. The only real option left is checking the SATA controller—if the hard drive uses SATA—and switching its mode to Compatibility/Legacy/IDE, which might work on older systems. I’m not sure about other changes, but booting from a disk could be a good start.
