Hi, I hope you placed your request in the correct section and someone can assist. I've set up Mint 19.3 32bit on this laptop, which is around 15 years old. I'm going away and need options for basic gaming or streaming. I managed to install Steam and it updated automatically at startup, but I'm encountering an error that doesn't make sense. I think my CPU should be powerful enough, but I'm not sure why it's happening. The issue is that I have an Intel Pentium Core 2 Duo T2300, so I'm puzzled as to why this error appears unless the CPU lacks certain features. It's hard to find clear information about this on the web. Do you have any suggestions?

Are you wondering if you're using the correct version? It looks like Steam requires a 64-bit operating system, while you're running a 32-bit one.

Steam demands 64-bit support and SSE3 features. Your chip lacks both. (It's a Core Duo, not a Core 2 Duo.) https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/...tions.html This machine is outdated for current Steam releases, and even then it would struggle with demanding applications. The processor doesn't handle 64-bit instructions.

It centers on CPU specifications rather than raw power. Intel's Ark documentation for the Core Duo T2300 is the best reference. Steam needs a 64-bit (x86-64/AMD64) processor, while your system only runs in 32-bit mode. It also requires the CMPXCHG16B instruction, which your CPU lacks. Even if you managed to run it, it would restrict you to older games that don’t use this instruction or are limited to SSE2. Considering its age, it probably wouldn’t handle modern applications effectively.

Sure thing! Here’s a revised version of your message:

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies. That clears things up now. The only reference I found was on a site that lists it as a Core Duo model — like the one at computeuk.co.uk. A Core Duo makes sense since it's just a Core Duo. I’m not planning to run any high-end games on it; my main titles are Carcassonne and Don’t Starve. I was hoping to install it after reading a Reddit thread suggesting it works on 32-bit systems, such as this one (https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/co...it_system/). I think online web gaming would be the best fit for me. Thanks again!
