Unable to achieve a consistent overclock with MSI OC scanner
Unable to achieve a consistent overclock with MSI OC scanner
I recently added a new PSU to my computer to prepare for future GPU upgrades. At the moment, I've been using the extra power to attempt overclocking. I managed to turn on XMP and Turbo in the BIOS, but when I ran the MSI OC scanner in Afterburner, my games are experiencing instability—Overwatch appears to be struggling with low FPS despite a steady 155, and the GPU overheats slightly (reaching 89°C). The room temperature is comfortable, airflow is adequate thanks to the case fan at the top-back and cool intake at the bottom.
Here are the details for reference:
Motherboard: Intel Z390 Gaming Pro Edition ATX
Graphics Card: Gigabyte RTX 2080 TI 11GB OC
CPU: Intel i7 9700K 8-Core 4.9GHz
CPU Cooler: 240mm Enclosed Liquid Cooler
RAM: 32GB DDR4 RGB
Primary Storage: 250G NVMe M.2 SSD (1500MB/s)
Secondary Storage: 1TB SATA3 SSD ProSpec (540MB/s)
Power Supply: Corsair HX1200i 1200W 80 Plus Platinum
It seems the GPU temperature is throttling, isn't it? I don't remember the exact number, but I think the target temp for that card is around 88°C. That reading feels really high, and it looks like something might be wrong with the unit. I bought the same card last week and also experienced consistently high temps (about 80°C), which made it uncomfortable to play for long periods. I sent it back and received the Strix 2080ti, which runs very cool (max 55°C during testing). From now on, I won't buy any Gigabyte cards again.
It seems the GPU temperature is throttling, isn't it? I don't remember the exact number but I think the threshold for that card is around 88°C. That reading is really high, doesn't it? It definitely looks like a faulty device to me. I bought the same model last week and also experienced consistently high temperatures (about 80°C), which made it uncomfortable to keep it running for extended gaming sessions. I sent it back and received the Strix 2080ti, which operates very cool—only reaching 55°C during stress tests. From then on, I learned my mistake and won't purchase any Gigabyte cards again.
