I was checking out those impressive ultra-wide monitors, but I learned some games don’t support 21:9 aspect ratios and often show black bars.

Yes, some games don’t work well. Most of them run on older engines. I managed to play Titan Quest at 3440x1440 resolution. So far, my 21:9 screen seems fine.

The majority of games I've played work with a 21:9 aspect ratio, while the exceptions use FlawlessWidescreen.

It’s ideal for gaming. Games that didn’t support it in the past six years can be updated to work now. Just black bars appear only during cutscenes. FOV jumps significantly without distorting the image.

Interestingly, certain older titles manage to handle extreme aspect ratios effectively. Examples include Portal and TF2.

For instance, older titles that don't use 21:9 might be outdated or less popular, and Minecraft does support 21:9.

They might be yes, but it's not guaranteed. Many new games, especially indie titles, face this issue and developers often disable support. Popular games usually get patches soon, though not always. If you're unsure about a game's compatibility or quality, wsgf.com is a helpful site to check before purchasing. I've encountered cases where no solution existed, which are rare.

It might just show how unfamiliar I am with 21:9 playback. Why would black bars on the sides be worse than a 16:9 native setup? Using a 16:9 monitor shouldn’t offer a better experience than a letterboxed 21:9 setup.
