Hi, I completed the pi hole guide for the float plane and a few recent versions. Everything seemed fine until my network service blocked the features on the router they gave me. I’m thinking about purchasing a used one from eBay. What should I check? The unit needs to be suitable for long-distance use (like through thick walls), it should be identifiable, and ideally a few years old. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

Your service likely came with a modem/router. Avoid connecting two routers directly—check if the device supports bridge mode. Look for a model supporting WiFi 5, or better yet WiFi 6 would be ideal. Range depends on location, nearby networks, and home construction. It's hard to confirm if a router offers "Long Range." 2.4 GHz works well for distance and signal strength but slower speeds; 5 and 6 GHz prioritize speed over coverage and reach. A mesh network could help if one unit struggles.

It's helpful you have something to begin researching. If 2.4 can handle a full 1080p Netflix stream, it could be a viable option. I'll look up the specifications. Thanks.

Since there are only three non-overlapping channels in the 2.4 Ghz band, it restricts your options significantly. More devices mean slower speeds. The official guidelines often don’t reflect real-world performance; lab tests assume perfect conditions. Be cautious with the reported speeds on router boxes—they may not match actual usage. Remember, your device’s capabilities matter. If your current setup works, the new one should too. Placing the router higher can also help extend the signal range by spreading it out.
