UDM Pro combined with PfSense offers a robust networking solution.
Hello everyone, I'm configuring a network for my new home. I have the UDM Pro along with a few switches and APs. I'm considering adding a PfSense box as a firewall before the UDM Pro. Do you think this would be a good idea or might cause more problems than it solves?
Those needing a pfSense device have surpassed the limitations of the UDM-Pro. Is that true? The UDM-Pro is a strong hardware firewall/router, fitting well within the Ubiquiti/UniFi network. Keep in mind that switching to pfSense means losing some connection with the UniFi Controller. However, if you value the advanced capabilities of pfSense more, it could be worth the change.
Consider the UDM-Pro you already have. Think about what adding pfSense would bring—both serve basic firewall and routing functions, but pfSense offers more features and greater flexibility if your networking knowledge expands beyond UniFi’s capabilities. You’ll already understand the benefits, so there’s little need to explore further. For users seeking tighter control and a more polished interface, the UDM/UDM-Pro/UDM-Pro set is adequate. However, if you’re interested in deeper customization or open-source options, pfSense provides a viable path. In short, pick one and stick with it.
