I experimented with the KDE distribution, but the interface didn’t match what I was used to from Mint and Ubuntu. It felt quite outdated, resembling an older version of Windows Vista. Perhaps I wasn’t searching thoroughly enough—I couldn’t locate the Terminal easily. Still, I missed finding a terminal environment. I prefer distros like Mint Edge or Mate, as well as Ubuntu, which offer a more modern and functional UI layout. I appreciate the dark, clean themes in Mint Mate and Edge that look great immediately. I often think background images should transition smoothly between light and dark tones to make icons stand out clearly on the screen. Anyone have suggestions for suitable distros for a Surface Pro 3? I tried Pop OS for a few months; it’s slow and clunky, though I still use it for basic web browsing, office apps, sketching, and note-taking. I managed to install Windows 11 with an activated license, but it’s bloated and no longer supports tablet mode because my keyboard pad isn’t compatible anymore. I didn’t want to revert to Windows 10 after seeing how much better other Linux distributions look. I believe the ideal choice should load quickly.

I’m moving toward Debian-based Mint Cinnamon from Windows 7. It’s working well for me. * I only had a short experience with Ubuntu back in 2009 on a low-end Pentium 4, so I don’t have current insights.

For newcomers, it's wise to choose an operating system with a recognizable design. For instance, Elementary OS resembles macOS, offering a comfortable interface. If you're transitioning from Windows, most users will find it easy to adapt. Consider trying EndeavorOS—it blends elements of both Windows and Mac, making the shift into Linux smoother.

It appears you prefer Ubuntu, yet keep Linux Mate on a separate SSD for testing. Ubuntu seems to function smoothly with another monitor, though some distros didn’t behave that way during your experiments. It’s possible the cable adapter for your Surface Pro played a role.

XFCE alongside any Linux distribution functions well when you link another display to a laptop.
