Ubuntu now features an official budgie version that looks great compared to the previous MacOS design. It seems to impress users who use Linux and Mac. I’ll share my thoughts once it’s ready for download. https://budgie-remix.org

I'm torn between 16.10 and 16.04. I don't have enough capacity for both.

Budgie remix isn't an official Ubuntu spin-off. However, Canonical has recently planned to integrate Ubuntu Budgie into a standard Ubuntu release. The first official version is expected around 17.04 in April 2017. This appears to be a well-considered decision from Canonical. While the Budgie desktop is relatively new, it's already gaining significant traction. The custom Budgie-remix project looks quite impressive.

It sounds like the latest updates aren't officially confirmed yet, but we're expecting a future release soon. That makes sense.

The current Budgie remix is essentially a custom project, but it seems to be receiving some support from Cannonical. Personally, I really enjoy the Budgie desktop—I've used it on various distributions and found it quite appealing. It still has room for improvements, but it's fairly recent. In my view, Budgie was what Gnome 3 should have offered for traditional desktop use. While I don't like how Gnome has evolved with Gnome 3, Budgie is a solid alternative. If the official 17.04 release comes next year, I expect this option to gain more popularity than Ubuntu Gnome and possibly even surpass Ubuntu Unity.
