You're experiencing a purple screen during boot in Ubuntu Fossa, making it hard to reach the desktop. The issue seems related to GDM3 reinstallation not working. A video showing what's happening might help clarify the problem.

Yes, the pop-up requesting a password is standard. I’m good to go—howdy! You can also log in using the command line if needed.

This idea seems a bit silly, so keep an eye on the user interface loading.

Try reinstalling the fix that works well for many problems. It might also be worth checking if a safe mode option exists in Linux you're not sure about.

a safe option exists, but I can still access it via the command line. I’m not keen on reinstalling Ubuntu again—this is my fifth attempt.

It's a free operating system if you're not willing to keep restarting, then perhaps switching to Windows with an Ubuntu VM might be better. This comment isn't meant that harshly. Edited August 13, 2020 by xcluse

I'm set to reinstall, it feels like doing so repeatedly is a bit dishonest.

Just attempt loading the UI, see if that resolves the issue
