The recent decline in the Australian dollar has led experienced super-pit managers to hire Ubisoft, a prominent PC game studio, aiming to cut costs and boost operations. Those managing the gold mining business admit they had limited options, but their existing approach was not very innovative. The Superpit—world’s biggest open-shaft mine in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia—has been facing challenges meeting demand and scaling up before. "Our main issue is that our products are now being outbid by competitors for growth... To ensure the company's survival, we need to change our way," said a spokesperson. Ubisoft’s involvement is expected to expand the pit’s size significantly, potentially doubling its current footprint by mid-2015. The impact will extend beyond just dimensions; experts say the mining depth could rise sharply under this plan, possibly reaching several layers of the Earth's mantle by 2025. Many staff members are concerned about the consequences, fearing job losses and a split community between those wanting quick results and those prioritizing environmental protection.
