Three months back a user began a discussion about activating smart detections on his new Protect device. He created a local admin account and didn’t intend to allow remote access, as the setup was for an offline installation. The instructions were unclear—he saw a grayed-out option saying “Please connect to the network to read terms and conditions.” Ubiquiti replied that he needed to connect to the internet to enable remote features. Since then, they haven’t confirmed whether this was deliberate or a glitch. Many replies asked for clarification, noting that local AI processing should require internet access, which is problematic because the product is supposed to work without it. A Ubiquiti representative on Discord confirmed this was intentional. If this is the case, the camera product pages should warn users that locally processed AI detections need internet access. The main developer of Home Assistant integration for Unifi Protect has already submitted a request to remove all smart detection capabilities as a protest and to highlight concerns about unnecessary cloud dependency. Continuing to rely on cloud services for essential local functions is considered a poor practice. If you’re unsure, please contact Ubiquiti to resolve this and let us know we won’t support such changes. Perhaps @jakkuh_t could reach out to Ubiquiti to discuss this matter.
