Early tests on 9820x with mild overclocking were stable, but random shutdowns occurred when the 00 debug code appeared on the MSI Tomahawk Arctic X299. An Intel replacement was ordered. After two weeks of normal operation on a new CPU, putting the machine to sleep, it failed again with the same code. What might be causing this?

Summary: I bought a 9820x on eBay for around £850, bundled with a few high-end components. It worked well initially but suddenly stopped after a few weeks. The 00 code appeared repeatedly, and even after replacing the CPU, it kept failing. I checked forums and found others reported similar issues. Possible causes include MSI BIOS problems with XMP settings, faulty RAM, or issues with the RGB lighting kits. I’m considering an RMA with Intel, but doubts remain about the board’s reliability. The overheating and unstable temperatures also raise concerns. I’m seeking advice on whether the RGB hardware or power delivery is the culprit.

Choose another board or turn off the machine. Both failures occurred during sleep mode.

Both options are feasible, but avoiding sleep mode because of CPU damage concerns isn’t realistic for me. Further research suggests the Vengance RGB RAM could trigger voltage spikes when the PC powers up, especially since it’s cached in RAM. It’s mostly a matter of interpretation, though it makes sense. It might just be that none of the parts are to blame—perhaps the combination of them is the issue. It seems strange most users on X299 haven’t noticed this if it were true.
