Two fresh constructions, comparable problem with electrical source (possibly)
Hello, I just put together two machines that look almost the same: an i9 12900k Asus Prime Z690-P WiFi with 32 GB DDR5 (one has G.Skill, the other Corsair), a Corsair HX1000 PSU, and a Corsair AIO (either H100X or another model). Both run Windows 10 64-bit on M.2 SSDs. The machine I’ve been working on mostly troubleshooting has an EVGA 3080 Ti, while the other will get an EVGA 2080 Ti. They’re acting oddly, almost as if there’s a power problem. I’ve tried many fixes, so I apologize for the length. The 3080 Ti worked fine for a few days, but when loading a game it would freeze and the screen went black. Fans spiked up then stopped completely. After turning it off manually, it wouldn’t start again. There was a faint “crackle” noise from the PSU during attempts. The other system didn’t work with the 2080 Ti installed and the power LED flashing (which I think means no GPU). So far it’s been running on its built-in GPU until I found out what’s wrong. I’ve changed the power cable, used different cables, switched power switches, and updated drivers. HWMonitor shows normal temps and voltages, though it shuts down suddenly—possibly missing a spike. I managed to get it working briefly by running the Heaven benchmark, but the last time it crashed again after a black screen. The 2080 Ti was still alive after I swapped it in. I’ve filed a ticket with Corsair, but I’d like to know more troubleshooting ideas. It seems the GPU is drawing a huge amount of power suddenly, which might be the issue, but I don’t have a multimeter or a power monitor to test. Corsair mentions a problem with 1200W PSUs, but that doesn’t cover these models. Thanks for your time.
He breaks down a fairly straightforward experiment with extensive explanation.
I bypassed the paper clip test since the system started working properly when the GPU was removed. Please note that it can now boot and operate sufficiently for internet access using the 2080 Ti, with only the GPU swap being the sole hardware adjustment.
I also didn’t test using the GPU in another PCI slot. I’m curious about using my old 650W power supply solely for the GPU while keeping the rest on the 1000W unit. This setup hasn’t been tried before, though I remember seeing it in Scrapyard Wars—maybe worth a go?
I have a BIOS version 0404 from October 9, 2021. I tried using PRIME-Z690-P-WIFI-ASUS-1013 from the support site dated February 22, 2022, but EZ Update failed to read it despite extraction. I followed the Asus tutorial and downloaded AI Suite 3, though it doesn’t show EZ Update in its side menu. Then I went to Armory Crate, which seems to have replaced some files, and checking its BIOS page shows no updates available. I’m unsure what to do next.
