I'm checking options for upgrading from an i5 7400 to a 3700X. I already own the 3700X but need a motherboard. I found this link: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/X470-GAMING-M7-AC. My system has two 8-pin power connectors for the CPU, while my PSU only has one. Should I use both connectors?
Consider other choices like B550 and X570 boards instead of the X470 right away. For ambient cooling setups, only one 8-pin connector is sufficient for the Ryzen 3000 chips.
I spotted a solid offer on a used board and the B550 and X570 models are significantly pricier. I don’t really feel they add value, though if you’re considering it, let me know!
Getting a B550/X570 Tomahawk model will satisfy you. A Ryzen 3000 CPU cannot reach full performance on a single 8-pin connector under typical cooling conditions (air or water).
As mentioned before, this option is more affordable than any B550s or X570 models I’ve found, and the newer boards don’t seem to provide much value. However, if you have any ideas, let me know!
I wouldn't purchase an X470 board for over 150$. Alternatives such as the X570 Tomahawk at 200$ offer better VRM design than some top X470 models.
Sure, just to clarify, it's not the end of the world if they don't back next-gen, and I probably won't upgrade again for a couple more months. I still have to upgrade from a 1060 to 1440p.
