Third core on my X5660 is really bad now. Because it's an X58 model, the BIOS doesn't let you switch off a specific core, so I have to disable it through the OS. I’m not worried about having a penta-core setup; I won’t even play on it for a while. Even if I do, I just need one thread running and the rest should still perform decently. I expect around 4.5g at about 1.4v with all five cores active, assuming the third core is turned off.

Yes, XTU supports precise, single-core tweaks for that CPU.

I'm not certain if XTU is compatible with a 12-year-old Xeon processor.

Have you explored the i5 yet, or looked into other options? It's always worth giving it a try.
